Facial aesthetics treatments – the importance of a consultation

There are many different reasons why our faces change when we age. Changes to the underlying anatomy such as the bones, muscles and fatty areas, and changes to our skin as hyaluronic acid and collagen production diminishes.

The skin on our face can begin to thin, causing lines and hollows to appear more pronounced, especially around the cheeks and mouth. If you feel dissatisfied with your appearance, a consultation with a qualified, experienced facial aesthetics practitioner could be the right choice for you.

Should I have facial aesthetics treatment?

There are several factors to take into account when you’re thinking about facial aesthetics treatments, from the results you’re looking for to your personal circumstances and budget.

A consultation with an experienced practitioner is essential, where you can ask all your questions and get a personalised treatment recommendation.

You will also want to visit the treatment location, to ensure you feel satisfied with the hygiene and safety procedures, and to discuss the practitioners qualifications. Here at the Penryn Dental Practice, you’ll find a discreet, welcoming and comfortable environment for your private consultation.

What results could I expect from facial aesthetics treatment?

Having a thorough consultation is important to establish your concerns and then, most importantly, offer you the right treatment to achieve your desired result.

This may be plumping or reshaping the face to more youthful contours, or making improvements to the appearance of the skin.

How to treat an ageing neck

Usually, when people think about anti-ageing treatments, they think about what can be done for fine lines and wrinkles on the face. But did you know that there are non-surgical options available that can also treat an ageing neck?

The neck area can be especially affected over time, as the delicate skin of the neck contains less elastin fibres than the face, which results in weaker collagen support. Men and women both find that they not only experience lines and wrinkles, but also sagging skin, often called crepey or turkey neck, or are more likely to develop a double chin.

When we speak to patients, they often tell us that they are experiencing a loss of confidence due to the appearance of their neck. They are concerned that despite other anti-ageing efforts, such as a regular hairdresser visits and skincare routines for their face, their neck and décolletage can not be treated, and will therefore always give away their age.

However, thanks to developments in non-surgical treatments, there are some fantastic options available to help you roll back the years and give you have a tighter, more youthful neck area.

For example, anti-wrinkle injections can be used around the lower jaw and neckline, which will deliver a tightening and lifting of the area.

Another option could be using dermal fillers to improve volume and elasticity in the neck. This effective treatment works well on this delicate area and will help reduce sagging skin, making it appear more plump and smooth.

Our Facial Aesthetics practitioner Claire works with each patient on a case-by-case basis, to really understand your individual concerns and requirements. Claire will then help design an individual treatment plan to deliver the results you’re looking for right here at our discreet, private practice near Falmouth, Cornwall.

Treatments for tired eyes

From laughter to fury and everything in between, our faces reflect a huge range of emotions every day. It’s an essential part of how we communicate, but what if your face isn’t reflecting how you’re really feeling?

As we age, and the skin begins to lose its natural elasticity, we often find that natural creases, fine lines and wrinkles remain on the face. This is especially common around the eyes, which leads many people to feel they look tired and world weary, when actually they’re feeling fresh & ready to go.

So what is causing your eyes to look tired? And is there anything you can do to change the appearance of tired eyes?

Some people find the lines at the corners of their eyes, known as the crow’s feet, become more pronounced over time. This is because the skin loses bounce and volume as elastin and collagen levels decrease as we age. The skin around the eyes can become particularly prone to wrinkles and sagging, especially when the muscles that contract in the area when we smile and frown are used constantly.

Another consequence of frowning, or even just squinting on sunny days or when reading, are the lines that form between the eyebrows and on the forehead. These can make your eyes not only look tired, but even make you appear stern, disapproving and unapproachable.

Perhaps you’ve also noticed your eyebrows themselves have sunk lower towards your eyes. Again, this can make the eyes look hooded and weary. As we age the muscles that hold the eyebrows in place, combined with skin that loses elasticity and strength, plus the effect of gravity, can combine to make the eyebrows drop.

All of these issues can be addressed using anti-wrinkle injections, to smooth out fine lines and creases around the eyes. Depending on your individual requirements, these may also be combined with dermal fillers, to boost and plump the skin, brightening and lifting the skin around the eyes so you look brighter and more alert.

Claire Shaw, the experienced facial aesthetics practitioner at our clinic in Cornwall can deliver careful, considered anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments. Claire will work closely with you to understand which areas of the face are causing you concern, and can offer advice and guidance on the best treatment for your eyes if you feel they are looking tired.

One patient’s experience

Our patient Bridget is happy for us to share her story. Bridget came to Penryn Dental Practice after deciding to find out more about getting the smile she’d always wished for…

“I have wanted that special natural smile for years but never had the confidence to have it done by my dentist. So I decided to move to Penryn dental practice where I received a warm welcome from the moment I walked in.

My first visit with Donal O’Halloran went well and he discussed with me what he could do and how he could achieve the look I was wanting for years.

After many visits and a trip to a technician I have now got a smile to be proud of. I cannot thank Donal enough for what he has done. No more photos of me with my hand over my mouth.”

As part of the initial planning, Donal used our new intra-oral and facial scanning facilities to create a digital mock-up of what Bridget’s smile would look like once treatment was complete. This enabled us to give Bridget a predictable outcome before we started any treatment.

When Donal showed her these images on the computer, Bridget was able to have total confidence to go ahead with the treatments, as she knew how her smile would finally look.

Take a look at how we transformed Bridget’s smile…

Wrinkle Reduction

The development of lines and wrinkles around our face can be the most obvious early signs of aging. They develop from the contraction of facial muscles that we use in our expressions, and whilst those laughter lines can indicate a friendly face, the frown lines between our eyes, or the lines in our forehead can make us look tired or angry.

Crows Feet

Botulinum toxin (botox) treatments are safe, simple and effective at softening the dynamic wrinkles that can deepen with age. Factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress can cause the wrinkles to deepen and remain. Patient reports show high levels of satisfaction with the treatment, that can be beneficial not only for wrinkle reduction, but also for treatment of high lip lines (gummy smiles), migraines, and excessive sweating.

Dermal Fillers

The aging process affects several layers of the face, starting with bone, muscle, fat and the skin. Dermal filler treatments can be used to smooth and plump the skin, enhance thin lips and create a volumised and more youthful contour to the face. At Penryn Dental Practice we offer Belotero Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that have an excellent safety profile, biocompatibility and integrate well with the dermis to create a natural effect.

Skin Care

In addition to providing a range of leading facial aesthetics treatments it is of course important to look after the outer layer – the skin! We offer clinically proven, evidenced-based skin care from Neostrata, which can address a number of skin issues. The specially developed formulas stimulate cell renewal, boost collagen and even skin tone to help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores and under eye puffiness.
